I fly out of Newark for Scotland tomorrow to attend The Epistle to the Hebrews & Christian Theology 2006 conference at St. Mary's College of the University of St. Andrews. I'm extremely thankful for the grant from Backus Books that made this trip possible. My intention is to give a full report of the conference (and of the tour I'm taking), with pictures, on my blog once I return. Here are some of the scholars presenting papers:

Craig Blomberg, Denver Seminary
Ardel Caneday, Northwestern College
Richard Bauckham, University of St. Andrews
Edward Adams, King's College London
John Polkinghorne, Queens' College, Cambridge
Richard Hays, Duke University (Keynote Address)
Harold Attridge, Yale Divinity School
I. Howard Marshall, University of Aberdeen
John Webster, University of Aberdeen (Keynote Address)
Bruce McCormack, Princeton Theological Seminary

Hey, Mr. Cruver...this is Jordan Huff. I gotta tell you, i'm so pumped up for the Hebrews class this fall. I know that you truly see and savor Christ in a very nuptual way. I've been doing some of my own study on the book this summer, and it's been amazing. It's such an effulgent blessing to see the glory of Christ expressed so wonderfully in the work of the atonement and the establishment of the New Covenant. Lately, I've been somewhat perplexed regarding Hebrews 10:26-39. As a Calvinist, it's a difficult passage to swallow at first glance. I'm working my way through John Owen's commentary on the passage, and it's been helpful....but i'm curious what your thoughts are. I'm aware that we, as believers, need to fear God's punitive wrath on those are apostates...however, the way that the writer uses the language of the "sacrifice for sins" in verse 26 confuses me. If there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins for those who continue sinning, then it appears that their sins drove out the atoning work of Christ in their life. Now, I'm trying to get the full context and background of this passage in the full spectrum of the book and the Bible....from there, i know that the interpretation of what i just stated is not correct...so, i'm seeking the correct one. I struggle with this passage, because i love the Scriptures and I love the doctrines of grace....not to mention i'm addicted to Jonathan Edwards.. However, I'm grateful for the struggle and it's increasing God's gravity and fullness in my life. Anyways, I'd be grateful for any insight you could give me on this passage. I know you're extremely busy, but if you have some free time, i'd appreciate an e-mail or a phone call....630-440-3420. I hope you're having a great summer, and i look forward to learning much from you this next school term. Thanks....
Soli deo gloria,

Jordan

I read a book last summer entitled "The St. Andrews Seven" about seven students who founded the missionary society. It was so fascinating. Here are a few of my favorite lines from an address made by John Urquhart on the Duty of Personal Engagement in the Work of Missions:

"If the words of Christ be true,...to shrink from duty, even in the face of all the trials that present themselves in the contemplation of the missionary life, does not argue a weakness of faith merely, but a want of faith. The man who is not ready to part with country and even life itself, at the bidding of his Saviour, is not worthy of the name of a disciple."

"There is such an utter discrepancy between the command and the professed obedience of it; between the work to be performed, and the scantiness of the means that are expected to accomplish it; between the obvious call of duty, and the frivolous excuses by which they are evaded."

"And is not a common pardon offered, and has not a common Saviour died for us all?"

I thought you might find that interesting--and I highly recommend the book.
